The Semmering Railway is a historic railway line located in Austria, traversing through the picturesque Semmering Pass in the Eastern Alps. Constructed between 1848 and 1854, it is renowned as one of the greatest feats of engineering from the early days of railway development. The railway was designed by the notable engineer Carl Ritter von Ghega and represents a masterpiece of 19th-century engineering, blending seamlessly into the surrounding natural landscape. What makes the Semmering Railway truly remarkable is its innovative use of viaducts, tunnels, and bridges to navigate the challenging terrain of the Semmering Pass. The line stretches over 41 kilometers and includes 16 viaducts and 15 tunnels, all meticulously crafted to withstand the harsh mountain environment while providing breathtaking views for passengers.

As the Semmering Railway is now being renovated and includes one of Europe's largest infrastructure projects, we were asked to create a small exhibition for train enthusiasts and visitors of all ages to showcase some behind-the-scenes images, detailed engineering processes and meticulous design aspects of this UNESCO World Heritage site. In addition to the Semmering tunnel, the entire train station was also renovated and rebuilt in accordance with monument protection laws as it houses one of Austria’s oldest train stations built by the Habsburg Empire and its train-loving Emperor Franz Joseph. Throughout the exhibition we highlighted to what extent a UNESCO World Heritage can be combined with track and tunnel construction and the ravages of time and its impact on the region. The exhibition invites visitors to immerse themselves in fascinating technical details and opens up a new perspective on the complexity of an infrastructure project of such scale.
