For the bi-yearly exhibition »Niederösterreichische Landesausstellung« Studio Engel in collaboration with Nofrontiere was asked to design an extensive architectural concept as well as a visual identity that evolves throughout the exhibition and showcases Lower Austria’s incredible history. »Marchfeld Secrets. People. Culture. Nature« at the Marchegg Castle tells the story about the region's cultural and natural history. The unique natural environment with its fluvial landscapes and alluvial forests in combination with the rich cultural history including pivotal moments in Austria’s past, create a tension that characterizes the Marchfeld as a region and has become the main inspiration behind the exhibition’s design.

The exhibition design included numerous illustrations that present different aspects of the human, animal, and plant world of Marchfeld. In cooperation with the curators, we created unique visuals and infographics that highlight various stories of the exhibition and offer an immersive view of the evolution of the region. Using both color and a geometric grid system that resembles the architectural design concept, we created immersive rooms that symbolize the purely natural region and evolve into an industrial area over time.
The beginning of the exhibition showcases the thriving natural environment of the region with powerful and vibrant green tones. As human interference increases over time, we create a colorsystem mirroring a sense of urge and guiding the viewer through important moments of history. For example, during the war against Napoleon, the Marchfeld became a place of war, death, and destruction, which we reflected with a dark, clustered architectural concept that is heavy and somber. During these dark times Austria was a wealthy, powerful monarchy ruled by the Habsburg Empire. We therefore set a contrast to the darkness by using a royal blue to embody imperial wealth of the region.
The architectural design reimagines the curatorial storyline and evolves from an untamed, organic flow of pristine nature to the clear interventions of man in the form of rigid, geometric systems. This dynamic interaction creates an experiential congruence between content and form and, along with a variety of original historical objects, tells a vivid story throughout the tour.
