Getting lost on your way to a class? Or even worse, an exam? There’s nothing worse. The WKO Campus in Vienna is a modern architectural building situated in the heart of the city and stands as a beacon of educational excellence and entrepreneurship. It is a hub for learning, training, and professional development and hosts multiple schools, universities, and innovation centers. The building is a combination of three different architectural structures that have been added on over time.

In 2021, as the entire building was going through a large renovation, it was in need of a detailed, comprehensive, and easy to follow wayfinding system. Due to its numerous entrances, bridges, and staircases, getting lost in the building was one of the main issues students, visitors, and educators reported. The schools and universities made attempts to independently develop wayfinding systems, which caused a disjointed effort of large, overpopulated, and graphicly inconsistent signage throughout the building, only adding to confusion.
Studio Engel in collaboration with Nofrontiere meticulously studied every pathway, every staircase, entrance, and neuralgic point of the building, flagging every corner that might cause confusion. Throughout the process it was of utmost importance to create a clean, organized, and well-rounded visual wayfinding system visible for all visitors, students, and educators. It was also paramount that the design reflected the university’s architectural features, modern lines, and variety of in-house organizations without feeling overwhelmed and clustered. The resulting design builds on a square-based modular grid inspired by the squared logo system of educational institutions in the building. The squared signage system also represents the idea of thinking »around the corner« No matter from what direction you enter the building, you can see exactly where to go and find your way throughout the building. The sans serif typography in combination with a monochromatic color system embodies the modern architecture and quietly leads the visitors to their desired location.
